Top 10 Best Poetry Sites

I am delighted to bring you a lovely guest Top 10 from Brianna Rose Burton.

Brianna shares with us her great love of poetry and has put together a list of the best places to go to find a huge variety of beautiful, inspiring, funny and thought provoking poems and poets. I think there is no better place to start than with her own Literary Diaries Blog. You can also follow Brianna on Twitter @MerDivinity.

Just click on the images to visit these superb sites.

Literary Diaries

This is my poetry site and I would like to share my passion for poetry with you. As a teenager, I spent a lot of time posting my work on other poetry sites, until recently when I started my own site for today’s young, aspiring writers and poets. Some days I would spend hours searching the Internet for good poets, trying to find exceptional ones of today’s time. I found a couple, and so I made a list of all of them, and then I started my blog. It is exciting to find writers that are incomparable. If you want to read good poems by modern day poets like myself, then you should visit Literary Diaries.

All Poetry

This is a fun site with a huge collection of poetry, from modern day poets to famous ones like Robert Burns, Cicely Fox Smith, Jose Marti, Ernest Hemingway, and many more. I like AllPoetry for its variety, and its genuineness. It is one of the few sites which I glean inspiration from to write my own work. Its poetical wisdom and sincerity really digs deep into your core with its abundant creativity.

Poems & Quotes

I have been a part of this site for three years now. It is a good site for today’s writers to publish their poems and quotes. I have met some great people on P&Q, and you might, too! If you like variety, then visit this site.

Poet Seers

This is one of my favorite sites to go to if I want to read only the classics as it’s dedicated to classical poetry. The layout is very serene and buoyant. I totally recommend this website.

YouTube – Def Poetry

Def Poetry is a TV series for poets all around the world. As the number of contributors increases, it has become part of a poetry slam movement. I like to go on YouTube and watch this series because of its great poetical diversity. National Poetry Slam Champion, Taylor Mali, is one of my favorites.

Famous Poets and Poems

This is another great site dedicated to the classics. From Langston Hughes, to Sylvia Plath and William Wordsworth. I am sure this site will satisfy your need for a sip of undeviating creativity. You may even find some inspiration, like I do, from these illustrious authors.

Funny Poems and Poetry

This is a simple site full of comedic poems, ranging from all topics. This is perhaps the best poetry site I have found, particularly if you want a good laugh.

100 Best Love Poems

I love romance, especially romantic poems and novels. This is a wonderful collection of 100 best love poems by contemporary poets.

Mary’s Place

This is a lovely site for sending a friend a poem to express how you feel. I love how each poem comes with a picture and a song; it’s almost spellbinding, and it keeps your attention.

The Poet Speaks of Art

I love when the beauty of art is conveyed into the grace of words. This site is replete with poems that articulate the themes of different art works. Specific paintings are described through poetry. It’s purely exquisite!

Nude Descending a Staircase

X. J. Kennedy

Toe upon toe, a snowing flesh,
A gold of lemon, root and rind,
She sifts in sunlight down the stairs
With nothing on. Nor on her mind.

We spy beneath the banister
A constant thresh of thigh on thigh–
Her lips imprint the swinging air
That parts to let her parts go by.

One-woman waterall, she wears
Her slow descent like a long cape
And pausing, on the final stair
Collects her motions into shape.

Fantastic compilation, many thanks go to Brianna! Please do let us know who your favourites are!

Penman passed away, Great talent so missed.

  • RTD

I would take AllPoetry off of the list, they just did an upgrade to the site that has so many bugs that it almost wont work at all. And they have intagrated it to Facebook and Twitter, so its more of a social media site than it is Poetry now.

    JOSIE’S POEMS -

    http://www.josiespoems.webeden.co.uk/

This is a website which I made at the request of children in my local primary school for whom I started to write five years ago.  It was made three years ago and almost half a million people have accessed it,  99% of the poems are of my own writing and, being a retired teacher, I have always kept in mind that first and foremost these poems are for the enjoyment of children, but secondly they are also useful to teachers in their classrooms.  Two years ago 344 of my poems were chosen for publication by teachers right across West Yorkshire – quite an honour for a new writer.  They were published in five books.  Since then there are nine other books.  One of my poems has been made into an animated film by students in their final year of a degree course at Bradford University.  The poems have been written for every single age group from preschool to senior citizens, with every age in between and range from simple fun rhymes for children to  long ballads, petrarchan sonnets, silly poems to serious poems.  One poem for Remembrance Day has been put to organ music for a concert in Dymock Church, Gloucestershire this year and, hopefully, will be linked to my website by film.  I’ve brought back with a vengeance rhyme and rhythm into my poetry because children told me they loved it but also it helps them develop phonemic awareness, a key literacy tool.  This is not only the case for pupils for whom English is their first language, but also for those for whom English is a second language.  For this reason the poems go into schools in every country of the world.  This type of poetry is also perfect for performance poetry which has many important attributes as you will know.  Poetry can be linked to many other arts subjects to make a spectacular performance but the poetry itself needs to sparkle with rhyme and rhythm to bring this about.  Flat, lifeless poetry doesn’t work for performance I feel.  I hope you’ll visit this website which has, to date, taken many years of making, and say “hello” in my guestbook.

    http://www.poetryatlas.com/. It’s quite fun.

  • humorous poetry lover

For UK based humorous poetry try http://sukispangles.blogspot.com
    Also http://johncooperclarke.com both brilliant!

  • Cam M. Roberts

This list was half-fiddle half-faddle – 100% Laughable. I see no mention of the superlative websites belonging to the Poetry Foundation, The Poetry Archive, or The Academy of American Poets… legitimacy thrown out the window.
    Not sorry. I’m old… fashioned.

  • J.A.M

A few of these are horrible sites… only because they are political and about socializing/networking. They are not about the actual poetry itself…

  • J.A.M

I have been on many of these sites…. but one I can recommend that is actually just about writing and poetry is HelloPoetry.com The site is literally black and white… no special graphics or artwork…. just poetry
