Top 10 Doctor Who

September 2011 -  Time for an update now that the latest series is drawing to a close!

So where does Matt Smith fit now that he has established himself?

1) Matt Smith

Has brought something new to the role of The Doctor with his huge enthusiasm and sense of fun combined with an ability to show a wide range of emotions as required in some challenging story lines in the latest series. Great interaction with Amy, Rory and River Song and a man who (hopefully) will continue in the role for some time to come!

2) David Tennant 2005-2009

Probably many peoples favourite and sadly missed following the most recent regeneration.  Brought a new energy and depth to the role and a difficult act to follow.

3) Patrick Troughton 1966-1969

The second Doctor and another one who faced a huge challenge in replacing an established figure, particularly as this was the first regeneration, would the principle be accepted?  Patrick brought new life to the role with humour and fun that the first Doctor perhaps did not have.

4) Christopher Eccleston 2005

Took a massive chance in reviving the role after it had been off our screens for some time.  He successfully brought the role back to life and paved the way for David Tennant in his short time as the Doctor.

5) Peter Davison 1981 to 1984

Previously known for ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ Peter was probably a bit of a gamble as the Doctor following the eccentric Tom Baker.  He brought a new youthfulness and gentleness to the role.

6) Tom Baker 1974-1981

The fourth and longest serving Doctor.  He brought a refreshing eccentricity to the Doctor and was delightfully unpredictable.

7) Jon Pertwee 1970-1974

A more serious Doctor than his predecessor and his replacement. Capable of having fun moments but a bit of a pompous Doctor.

8) William Hartnell 1963-1966

The first Doctor who established the series at a time when this type of Sci Fi series was pretty much unknown on UK TV. Steady and serious, he laid good foundations for the rest to follow.

9)  Paul McGann 1996

Only appeared in a TV special.  Nice performance but not enough to judge.

10) Colin Baker 1984-1986

A bit of a shock after that nice Peter Davison and never really took to him.

Do you agree with my ratings?, Please do let me know.

Thank you for your list, very interesting!

The new man looks good, I think he might turn out to be one of the best, when do you get to see him?

    1. Tom Baker (THE Doctor to most people, including me.)
    2. Colin Baker (Complex, unstable, arrogant, noble, brave, sometimes cruel, but always a hero, he was a very interesting Doctor and a nice change from the more low-key Peter. Not to mention, that coat was awesome and Colin was hot. I really loved him.)
    3. Jon Pertwee (He doesn’t spell it with an ‘h,’ by the way.)
    4. Paul McGann (Actually, there is tons of material to judge Paul by with the Big Finish Audios. If you include those, he was actually the longest lasting Doctor.)
    5. The Valeyard – Michael Jayston (I count him, so sue me. = ) )
    6. David Tennant
    7. William Hartnell
    8. Sylvester McCoy
    9. Matt Smith
    10. Christopher Eccleston
    11. Peter Cushing (From the movies)
    12. Patrick Troughton
    13. Peter Davison

(I love all the Doctor a heck of a lot, I just like some more than others. But I’d die to meet Pat or Peter. Or any Doc. I’d just die more to see Tom or Colin. = ) ))

Thanks for your alternative listing :-) It’s amazing how different opinions on this can be, but I suppose that is part of the appeal! You are of course quite right about the spelling, can’t believe I missed that :-( You are clearly a great Doctor Who lover whose opinions I respect :-)

You’re kidding, right? Colin Baker? Paul McGann? David Tennant at the top? Really? Do you watch this show?

From the early black & white days, it’s all a matter of taste :-) What would your order be?

  • IHartMattSmith

I think Matt Smith is the best Doctor. My listing would be the same but with David Tennant in second and Matt Smith first… Maybe Christopher Eccleston 3rd, too.
