Top 10 Favorite Things My Dog Does

Top 10 Favorite Things My Dog Does

What a pleasure to be able to share this great Top 10 compiled by the lovely Gina Stark.

If you are looking for a lively, thoughtful and fun blog then check out Gina’s ‘Gitana Blog’. You can follow her on Twitter at SuuperG.

Her name is Paloma. It sounds refined, cultured…elegant, even. Well…she is anything but!  She’s a nut , rather than a mutt and you might  catch a measure of my deep love and affection for her in my list.

1) She doesn’t come when we call her. Really. It’s so darn spirited and independent of her;}

2) Rests her head on my lap as her signature way to beg…even when I’m standing!

3) Pulls things from impossible hard-to-reach counters and containers and wolfs them down, leaving a catastrophe to clean up. No, really, this is a good thing as it removes bread and all edibles from my home and keeps me svelte.

4) When we’re on a walk, and we encounter another dog and his “walker”, Paloma strides right up to the equally enthusiastically wagging dog, passes him and goes straight to the human for kisses and greetings. I love imagining the thought process in the other dog’s head after such a blatant public dismissal.

5) Walks with such a happy, bouncing gait that her ears spring and flap like a bird. We call her seagull ears.

6) I don’t usually speak of bodily functions, but this is a doggily function, so…She puts me in hysterics when I’m playing tug-o-war with her with a squeaky toy and she lets out a toot and instantly lets go of the toy, and whips around to look for who’s got another squeaky toy behind her!

7) She snaps her teeth at us when she wants something – which is often! I actually like this because she’s not barking and it sounds like alligator jaws gnashing.

8) This next one you’ll all appreciate – well, those of you on a laptop! Since I am able to ignore the teeth gnashing, she has recently taken to shoving my laptop lid down to close it in a huff…or better yet, she wedges her snout above my typing hands and pulls back on the lid, propelling it open and backwards and I can barely save it from launching off my lap! I know I’m supposed to get peeved, but I just laugh while clutching it protectively.

9) Spoons me in bed – albeit, bottoms up. Lordy.

10) She likes to sit on my lap on road trips. She is 62 pounds, mind you, and her claws dig fiercely into my thighs…but I hold her snug against me and ponder the yin and yang of dog love.

    Thanks for the smile. Your post has really helped me see that it’s okay that my dog doesn’t listen, eats everything but HIS food, chews his lease as a sign of blatant defiance and bites my arm when he wants to go outside. With just a little bit of thought I think I might be able to make all of those actions (and so many more) totally charming.

    Tenny…I mean Tony, thank you so very much for highlighting this post as a top for the year 2010! I knew at the time it was a tribute, as Paloma was battling inoperable brain tumors, but now that she has passed it makes it even more important for me that I catalogued her goofness. I think Paloma Power is pretty heady stuff, as she has made sure I was surrounded by amazing love and friendship this year from her new “top dog” position. I am so grateful for having connected with such a varied and wonderful array of dynamic, compassionate, animal-crazy people, through your blog, my own, Twitter and online in general.
    Wow…I wrote this when I was so new to blogging and social media and yes, commenting on blogs and DUH! not knowing enough to even see these lovely comments and reply! Thank you Tracey, Michael and Peri for sweet dog love! Peace. G
