PhiCar’s Purely Subjective Top Ten List of Favorite Movies 1934-1959
I am delighted to be able to post this list of favourite movies compiled by PhiCar a self confessed vintage movie addict.

1. Gone With The Wind (1939) Viviene Leigh Clark Gable Tumultuous love story set against backdrop of American Civil War. This movie garnered eight Academy Awards.
2. North By Northwest (1959) Cary Grant Eva Marie Saint Oscar-worthy performance by Cary Grant, this Alfred Hitchcock-directed suspense is a must see. Three Oscar nominations.
3. It Happened One Night (1934) Claudette Colbert Clark Gable Claudette Colbert Reporter (Gable) befriends, and later falls in love with, runaway heiress (Colbert). Directed by Frank Capra, this movie won five Oscars.
4. Bringing Up Baby (1938) Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn Stuffy paleontologist (Grant), daffy socialite (Hepburn) plus a leopard named “Baby” combine to make this a delightful screwball comedy. No Academy Award nominations for this one.
5. Rear Window (1954) James Stewart, Grace Kelly Is one of L. B. Jeffries’ (Stewart) neighbors a murderer? Another Alfred Hitchcock-directed movie, this one was nominated for four Academy awards.
6. Witness For The Prosecution (1957) Tyrone Power Marlene Dietrich Adapted from the play by Agatha Christie, this mystery is full of twists, turns, and surprises. Six Oscar nominations for this superb thriller.
7. Mrs. Miniver (1942) Greer Garson Walter Pidgeon A poignant look at family life in England during the early months of WWII. The winner of six Oscars.
8. I Remember Mama (1948) Irene Dunne Barbara Bel Geddes Philip Dorn Heartwarming story of a Norwegian immigrant family during the early 1900s in San Francisco, California. Nominated for five Oscars.
9. Brief Encounter (1945 UK; 1946 US) Celia Johnson Trevor Howard A married doctor and a married housewife contemplate having an affair after meeting in a train station. Three Oscar nominations for this wonderful film.
10.The Philadelphia Story (1940) Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart. Society’s elite kisses, tells, and misbehaves in this rom-com. Winner of two Academy Awards. James Stewart won his only (competitive) Oscar for his role in this movie.
